Autumn/Winter 2026: The Key Fashion Trends to Know

Key trends for AW26

As we head into autumn, it can be tempting to think you need a whole new wardrobe. But before you rush out to buy anything, take a good look at what you already have.

The good news is that many of the key trends for Autumn/Winter 2026 are wonderfully wearable. You probably already own pieces that can be given a fresh lease of life simply by changing how you style them.

My advice? Don’t follow trends for the sake of it. Instead, choose one or two that appeal to you and use them to update your existing wardrobe. A new pair of trousers, a beautiful knit, a suede jacket or a statement accessory can be enough to make last year’s clothes feel fresh again.

Here are some of the key trends to look out for this autumn and winter – and, more importantly, how you can make them work for you.

1. Rich, sophisticated colours

Autumn is always a great season for colour and this year we’re seeing plenty of rich, sophisticated shades.

Think chocolate brown, burgundy, deep berry, olive and warm neutrals, alongside some brighter pops of colour for those who like a little more impact.

Brown in particular is a wonderful alternative to black, particularly for those who have some warmth to their colouring. Or how about a pink-based burgundy for those with cool colouring? Try a chocolate-brown or burgundy coat, suede jacket or pair of trousers, or simply introduce the colour through accessories.

Of course, the most flattering colours for you will depend on your individual colouring, so don’t feel you have to wear a trend simply because it’s everywhere. Choose the versions that work with your own palette.

2. The return of the check

Checks are back in a big way for AW26, from traditional tailoring to softer, more contemporary versions.

A checked blazer is probably the easiest way to introduce the trend. Wear it with your favourite jeans for a relaxed weekend look or over tailored trousers for something smarter.

And if you already have a checked jacket in your wardrobe, don’t rush out to buy another one. Try styling it differently – perhaps with a fine knit underneath, a different colour of trouser or a statement brooch.

3. Relaxed tailoring

Tailoring continues to be important, but it has become softer and less formal.

Think relaxed jackets, wide-leg trousers, fluid suits and less structured silhouettes. This is great news if you’ve reached the stage where comfort matters just as much as looking polished!

A softly tailored jacket can be incredibly versatile. Wear it with jeans and trainers during the day, then swap the trainers for loafers or heels for a smarter look.

If you’re petite like me, be mindful of proportion when wearing oversized tailoring. Balance a looser jacket with a slimmer or more streamlined piece underneath, or choose a shorter jacket rather than allowing the fabric to overwhelm you.

4. Suede is everywhere

Suede is one of those fabrics that instantly gives an outfit an autumnal feel.

We’re seeing it in jackets, skirts, trousers, bags and shoes, with beautiful shades of tan, chocolate, olive and burgundy. Kettlewell is a great place to start as they are offering a suede collection in five gorgeous neutrals.

A suede jacket is particularly easy to wear. Throw it over jeans and a simple knit and you’ve instantly created a stylish autumn outfit.

If real suede isn’t practical for you, there are some excellent faux-suede options available too.

5. Feminine dressing – but with a modern twist

There’s a softer, more feminine mood around this season, with skirts, pretty blouses, elegant coats and ladylike details making an appearance.

But this doesn’t mean you need to dress head-to-toe feminine.

I love the idea of mixing contrasting pieces – perhaps a pretty blouse with straight-leg jeans, or a feminine skirt with a chunky knit and boots.

It’s all about creating an outfit that feels modern rather than overly ‘done’.

6. Beautiful knitwear

Knitwear is always an autumn essential, but this season it’s worth looking beyond the basic jumper.

Look out for interesting necklines, textured knits, stripes, statement cardigans and beautifully coloured jumpers.

A really good-quality knit can transform a simple outfit and is one of the easiest ways to introduce a new colour into your wardrobe.

And don’t underestimate the cardigan! Worn buttoned up with jeans or draped over your shoulders, it’s a wonderfully versatile piece.

7. Accessories are doing the talking

One of my favourite trends for AW26 is the emphasis on accessories.

Brooches, statement jewellery, belts, scarves and interesting handbags are all great ways to update clothes you already own.

A brooch in particular can completely change the look of a jacket or coat. Try one on a lapel, or even clustered with another small brooch for a more individual look.

This is also a much more sustainable way to embrace a trend. Rather than buying a whole new outfit, change the accessories and give your existing clothes a new personality.

8. The most important trend: individuality

Perhaps the biggest trend of all is moving away from the idea that we have to dress exactly like everyone else.

At 40, 50, 60 and beyond, you know yourself much better than you did when you were younger. Your clothes should reflect who you are now, not who you think you ought to be.

So by all means be inspired by the autumn trends, but don’t feel you have to adopt them all.

Ask yourself:

Do I like it?
Does it suit me?
Will I actually wear it?
Does it work with what I already own?

If the answer is yes, then it’s worth considering.

How to update your wardrobe for AW26

Before you go shopping, I recommend spending a little time shopping your own wardrobe.

Pull out your favourite autumn and winter pieces and think about what might be missing. You may find that you already have plenty of great clothes – they simply need a little updating.

Perhaps you need:

  • A new pair of wide-leg trousers
  • A beautiful knit in one of your best colours
  • A suede or suede-look jacket
  • A checked blazer
  • A new handbag or pair of boots
  • Some statement jewellery or a brooch
  • A scarf in a colour that lifts your existing wardrobe

You don’t need ten new outfits. A handful of carefully chosen pieces can give your wardrobe a completely new feel.

And before buying anything, make sure your new purchase will work with at least three things you already own. This simple rule can help you avoid those ‘what was I thinking?’ purchases that end up languishing at the back of your wardrobe!

My AW26 approach

My philosophy when it comes to trends is simple: use them for inspiration, rather than instruction.

The most stylish women I know aren’t necessarily wearing the latest trends from head to toe. They have worked out what suits them – their colouring, body shape, proportions and lifestyle – and then added a contemporary twist.

That’s what makes an outfit feel stylish rather than simply fashionable.

So this autumn, take a fresh look at what you already own, identify the gaps and then choose a few new pieces that will work hard for you.

You don’t need a whole new wardrobe. You just need the right pieces to make the wardrobe you already have feel like you again.
