Make-Up Made Simple

I’ve seen literally thousands of women in my studio before and after make-up and I can assure you that every one of them looked better, and felt more confident, wearing a little.

Buying make-up can be really daunting though, can’t it? There are just too many products to choose from and too much conflicting advice about which are the “must-haves” and how you should be wearing them. Whether that’s advice from the uber-glam young woman on the makeup counter or the online influencer plugging the latest miracle products you never even knew you needed!

Limit what you buy

You may be surprised to know that despite loving (and selling) makeup, I don’t recommend having masses of different products. In fact, I advise you to keep to a core set of products for two very good reasons:

  1. Make up has a shelf life. Have you noticed the little open pot symbol on the back of most products? If you look closely you’ll see a number with an M next to it. This is the number of months after opening after which you should discard any remaining product. Find out more here.  With a core set of products which you use regularly, you will likely get through them within the recommended time but if you have lots of different make-up products, the chances are that you won’t.

You really don’t need a lot. Save your money! If you’ve had a colour analysis and know which are your best colours, you will also know your best makeup colours. These will tone in with your clothing colours so you don’t automatically need to adjust your make-up to go with different outfits.

Make-up essentials

Everyone is unique and has their own “must haves” but these are the essentials that I think most women will benefit from having in their makeup bags to cover most occasions.

  • A foundation or tinted moisturiser that matches your skin colour in natural light
  • A concealer
  • A blusher
  • A mascara
  • An eye liner
  • Two or three fairly neutral eye shadows and one to add a pop of colour
  • Two lipsticks
  • A highlighter to brush over cheeks and under brows
  • Eyebrow pencil (you may not need this if you tint your brows)

My Personal Make-Up Routine

Daily 5 minute makeup routine is:

  • Black brown mascara
  • Sheer breeze lipstick
  • Under eye concealer
  • Moss eye pencil
  • Salmon & muscat blush

If I’m seeing clients ( or just want to look a bit better!)  I will add in the following and take about 7 minutes in total:

  • Morning Light foundation in Oyster
  • Blonde eyebrow pencil
  • Melon and olive eye shadows
  • Natural lip pencil

For evening when I want a bit more impact, I will allow  8 – 10 minutes and add the following to the above:

  • Highlighter – brushed across top of cheeks and under eye brows
  • Peppermint eye shadow – just a tiny amount at the outer corner of the eye
  • Spiced Peach Lipstick (or Tomato is I’m feeling bold!), instead of Sheer Breeze

See, makeup really doesn’t have to be complicated!
