Phew! I love the sunshine but the scorching heat of the past couple of weeks has proved a little too much for this post-menopausal woman who is STILL experiencing hot flushes! With heat like this, wearing clothes that keep you cool becomes a priority but it doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice style.
Your starting point should be to opt for looser fitting clothes in fabrics that wick heat away from the body. Natural fibres like linen, hemp and cotton are ideal but some semi synthetics such as lyocell/Tencel also work well. Opting for lighter colours will also help.
Where makeup is concerned, keep it minimal. For day time, when the heat is really on, don’t layer on too many skin treatments which may just slide off your face! Personally, I tend to forgo serums and moisturisers and just stick to high protection facial sun cream. Consider ditching foundation altogether or switch to a light-weight tinted moisturiser. If you find your mascara smudges in the heat, you may have more luck with a waterproof one. If you want to glam-up a bit more for evening, use a setting spray to help keep makeup in place.
In terms of clothing, here are my tips for a stylish high-summer wardrobe that will keep you cool:
A Go-To Shirt in a Light, Neutral Colour
This could be a breathable cotton poplin or breezy linen, Tuck it into shorts, layer it over a tee shirt dress, or knot it at the waist for a playful vibe. Oversized or slightly structured works beautifully, depending on your shape and style.
Lightweight, Tailored Shorts
Yes, shorts can be chic at any age. Unless you’re blessed with fabulous legs, ditch the teeny cutoffs and go for something with structure—a high-waisted tailored pair in a neutral shade like stone, navy, or taupe. They’re flattering, breathable, and perfect for dressing up or down.

The Effortless Summer Dress
A flattering, flowy dress that can take you from lunch to evening drinks is a summer essential. Think wrap styles, tiered midis, or A-line silhouettes in breathable fabrics. Go for prints that feel fun without overwhelming—florals, stripes, or subtle geometrics.
Wide-Leg Trousers
Breezy, elegant, and perfect for warm-weather evenings. A pair of linen or lightweight wide-leg trousers in white, sand, or a soft olive looks so fresh and timeless. Pair them with a tee or shirt, and you’ve got an instant outfit. If you’re petite or short in the leg, avoid the widest cuts though.
The Flattering Tee in Your Best Colours
A well-cut tee in a colour that makes your eyes pop and your skin glow is a capsule essential. Look for quality cotton or linen blends with a bit of structure (not too clingy, not too boxy). The magic happens when you choose hues that complement your natural coloring—think soft corals, deep teals, warm taupes, or cool blues and pinks, depending on your undertone. You can’t beat Kettlewell for a vast range of colours and various sleeve and neckline options.
Style tip: If you’re unsure of your best colours, think about the shades you always get compliments in—better still, come and see me for a colour analysis. When your tee flatters your face, even the simplest outfit feels elevated.
A Well-Cut Tank or Sleeveless Top
Confidence is the key to sleeveless dressing. Look for tanks with a flattering neckline and slightly thicker straps—think square neck, halter-style, or high-neck. Ribbed cotton or silk blends add a luxe touch.
The Summer Blazer or Lightweight Jacket
Perfect for dressing up a basic outfit or adding a layer during breezy evenings. Go for breathable fabrics like linen or cotton blends in versatile neutrals—think soft white, stone, or a classic navy.
Neutral Sandals (Flat & Heeled)
Footwear should strike the perfect balance between comfort and style. You’ll want one go-to flat sandal for everyday wear and a block-heeled or wedge option for dressier occasions. Tan, gold, or metallic tones are versatile and timeless.
Accessories That Speak Volumes
This is where the magic happens! A wide-brimmed straw hat, chic sunglasses, a bold cuff bracelet, or a colourful silk scarf can transform even the simplest outfit. Don’t underestimate the power of statement earrings, either—they’re an instant pick-me-up.
The Chic Everyday Bag
Swap the heavy tote for a lightweight crossbody or woven straw bag. Something roomy enough for your sunnies, sunscreen, and other essentials—but polished enough to elevate your look.
Final Thought: It’s Not About Age, It’s About Attitude
Your summer capsule wardrobe isn’t about playing it safe—it’s about curating pieces that make you feel like your best self. Midlife style is all about confidence, comfort, and a healthy dose of fun. So go ahead—edit your wardrobe, shop intentionally, and enjoy getting dressed again.
After all, the most stylish woman in the room isn’t the trendiest or the thinnest. She’s the one who knows exactly who she is—and dresses to honour that.
Here’s to your most stylish summer yet. ☀️
